Accused Hammer- and Fire-Wielding Shorewood Man's Alleged Victim Placed in Medically Induced Coma

Bail was set Monday for a Shorewood man accused of beating a woman in Joliet before setting a house on fire. The woman was hospitalized.

JOLIET, IL — Bail has been set at $2 million for an accused hammer-wielding, flame-throwing man who police say attacked a woman in southwest suburban Joliet on Sunday afternoon.

And the alleged victim of Timothy S. Gregory, 36, of the 900 block of South Raven Road in Shorewood, was reportedly placed in a medically induced coma because of her injuries. Gregory faces one felony count each of aggravated battery, residential arson, arson involving property exceeding $150 in value, aggravated arson, and criminal damage to property, according to Joliet Police Department arrest records.

He was taken into custody Sunday afternoon in the in the 1000 block of Infantry Drive in Joliet, where a pair of good Samaritans had reportedly stopped to help his blood-covered, screaming victim — A 36-year-old woman who is the girlfriend of Gregory's brother, CBS Chicago said.

Authorities quoted in a Daily Southtown report said Gregory struck the woman several times in the head with a hammer and before using lighter fluid to ignite the suburban Joliet home ablaze. One of the scene's passersby told CBS reporters that when he stopped to help, the woman was in the driveway yelling, "He tried to kill me."

Police say the victim was taken to an area hospital and placed in a medically induced coma due to her head injuries. Her condition was not immediately available Tuesday morning.

Gregory's bail was set during a Monday Will County court appearance. He would need to pay 10 percent of the bail, or $200,000 in order to be released. He is due back on April 21.
