5 Shot, 1 Killed As Gunmen Shoot Into Convenience Store
An 18-year-old woman was killed and four other people were shot Tuesday on the city's South Side.
CHICAGO, IL — Five people were shot, one fatally, when three shooters fired into a convenience store on Chicago's South Side Tuesday evening. Chicago police said one victim, an 18-year-old woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, was taken to University of Chicago Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the woman as Jaya Beemon. Relatives told ABC Chicago Beemon was an innocent bystander, saying she was a nursing student at Malcolm X College and was shopping for food at the convenience store when she was shot and killed.
Police said the other victims are an 18-year-old man who was shot in the back and taken to University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition; a 63-year-old man who was shot in the leg and taken to University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition; a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the arm, chest and ankle and transported to Northwestern Hospital in stable condition; and a 19-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was also taken to Northwestern in stable condition.

Police said three shooters, two men and a woman, opened fire around 5:20 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Avalon. They fled the scene in a white vehicle.
Police told the Chicago Tribune the shooters stood in the entrance of the convenience store and sprayed the business with bullets, firing at least 20 shots.

Beemon's family said they were not allowed to view her body. Police told ABC a scuffle broke out at University of Chicago Hospital as police attempted to clear the emergency room, saying Beemon's mother struck and kicked an officer, according to ABC. Her mother was charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor resisting/obstructing an officer.
Chicago Police Department Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said investigators were searching camera feeds near the convenience store for evidence.
