6-Year-Old Boy Dies From Injuries From South Side House Fire

SOUTH SIDE, IL – A 6-year-old boy died Wednesday night after he and his four siblings were left alone at home when the house caught fire.

Chicago fire crews responded to a fire in the 1300 block of South Evans Avenue around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, police said.

The 6-year-old boy was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in extremely critical condition, according to police. He was later pronounced dead.

The boy was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Ron Johnson, 6, who lived in the same block where the fire broke out, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Four other children who were at the home were uninjured.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, officials will be distributing smoke detectors to the neighboring homes Thursday morning.

Thomas Ahern, spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department, said in a tweet Wednesday night the boy and his four siblings were left unattended in the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
