Chicago Police Shoot Armed Man In South Side Apartment Building

The shooting happened Wednesday night during a confrontation with the man following a chase.

CHICAGO — Chicago police shot and wounded an armed man during a chase into a South Side apartment building, according to authorities. The man was taken to a local hospital in guarded condition, and no officers were hurt, police said in a statement Wednesday.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood. Officers saw an armed man and chased him into an apartment building.

A confrontation between the man and the officers, and police opened fire, authorities said. The man was hit in the upper body, police said.

A 9mm handgun and an extended magazine were recovered from the scene, according to police spokesman Anthony Gulielmi, who released a photo of the weapon online. Police have not released the name of the man or said if charges have been filed against him.

The man suffered a neck wound in the shooting and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition, the Chicago Tribune reports. The man's family told the Tribune that he is a father with two children.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability now will investigate the incident. Officers involved in the shooting will be on routine administrative duties for 30 days as part of Chicago Police Department policy.
