Nearly $1M In Rehabs To Chicago's Unoccupied North Pullman Homes
The Chicago project comes on the heels of other community projects meant to spark economic development in the community.

CHICAGO — Vacant historic homes in the Pullman neighborhood are scheduled for nearly $1 million in renovation work, a plan local leaders hope will continue to spur economic development in the community.
The 35 row houses set to be redeveloped are a short walk from the Pullman National Monument site and other new developments including an Amazon Distribution Center, and a Culver's restaurant scheduled to open next year.
“As someone who has lived through the hard times here when no one thought Pullman and Roseland had a chance to survive, it’s gratifying to see that all are pulling together to continue the renewal that is happening here,” Ald. Anthony Beale said in a statement. “I am excited for the work to begin, so we can add these homes to next year’s Pullman Homes tour and welcome the newest residents.”

A total of 35 homes will receive the nearly $1 million in rehabilitation work before being placed back on the market next year at a projected average price of $120,000. Any perspective buyer of one of the properties will be required to make 80 percent to 120 percent of the area median income, which currently sits at just under $37,000 per year.
“We had originally thought that these homes would be used for affordable rental housing, but the financing was not available,” Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives President David Doig said in a statement. “But with necessity the mother of invention, we are doing something that the entire community is excited by — increasing homeownership in an area once written off by many.”
