Man Charged After Allegedly Pointing Gun At Chicago Cop
The 23-year-old man was wounded in the neck by an officer following a chase into an apartment building.

CHICAGO —A South Side man who was shot and wounded by Chicago police faces multiple felony charges stemming from the incident. Derrell Johnson is accused of pointing a gun at an officer following a chase into an East Chatham apartment building, according to police.
Johnson, 23, of the 8700 block of South Escanaba Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood, was charged Friday with unlawful use of a weapon by a paroled felon, aggravated assault of a police officer with a weapon, possession of a high-capacity magazine and metal-piercing bullets and being an armed habitual criminal. All the charges are felony, and his bond hearing was Friday.
According to police, the incident happened just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood. Officers say they spotted Johnson with a gun and chased him into an apartment building.

A confrontation between Johnson and the officers ensued, and Johnson pulled a gun and pointed it at police. An officer then opened fire and hit Johnson in the upper body, authorities said.
A 9mm handgun and an extended magazine were recovered from the scene, according to police spokesman Anthony Gulielmi, who released a photo of the weapon online.

Johnson was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital and is in guarded condition. He suffered a wound to the neck.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Johnson is on parole after he was released from jail following his guilty plea to a drug-related felony in 2015. In 2012, he pleaded guilty to two counts of armed robbery and given an eight-year prison sentence, the report added.
