South Side Sailor Will Be Laid to Rest on May 6

U.S. Navy Master-At-Arms Seaman Carlos Mazon passed away at age 19 while on active duty in the Persian Gulf.

CHICAGO, IL -- A South Side sailor who died in the Persian Gulf while on active duty will be laid to rest on Saturday, May 6. The Illinois Patriot Guard Riders will be standing a flagline for U.S. Navy Masters at Arms Seaman Carlos Mazon. The 19-year-old sailor was stationed at the Naval Station Bahrain when he passed away.

Arrangements are being handled by Michael Coletta Sons Funeral Home, 544 W. 31st Street, Chicago. Mazon will be waked from 2 to 9 p.m. with services taking place at 7 p.m. on May 6. Interment is private.

The young sailor’s parents have requested the presence of the Illinois Patriot Guard. Starting at 2:30 p.m. outside the funeral home, the riders will be presenting honors with the Navy, and assisting with the dignified transfer and visitation of Mazon’s remains. Community members are invited to stand outside the funeral home to pay homage to the young man.

Known as “Bill” among his friends, Mazon died on April 23. He graduated from Air Force Academy High School in Chicago and was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 42. According the young sailor’s obituary on Legacy.com:

“Carlos brought love and laughter to all his relationships … Carlos has a passionately gentle heart and could frequently be found bringing home stray dogs and helping reunite them with their families. Children gravitated towards his playful spirit and his friends all share countless anecdotes of Carlos giving life saving advice and being there during hardships.”

Mazon was the beloved son of Amado and Carina. Dear brother of Katya, Amada, and Luis Mazon. Loving grandson of Federico and Gloria Chacon, and Cirila Lucena. Fond nephew, cousin, and friend of many.
