Target Set To Close Stores In Chatham, Morgan Park

Two of six stores Target has chosen to close nationally are on the South Side of Chicago.

CHICAGO - Two of six stores Target decided recently to close early next year are on the South Side of Chicago. The Chicago stores set to close in February are located at 11840 S. Marshfield Ave. in Morgan Park and at 8560 S. Cottage Grove Ave. in Chatham. The stores will remain open until Feb. 2, 2019, a Target spokeswoman said in a statement to media.

"The decision to close a store is always difficult, and follows a rigorous annual process to evaluate the performance of every store in the portfolio and maintain the overall health of the business," the company wrote in the statement.

According to the Chicago Tribune, there are about 115 full- or part-time workers at the Morgan Park store and about 120 in Chatham. The employees in good standing will have the option to transfer to another Target in the area, store officials said.

"Target remains committed to Chicago and will continue to serve guests at nearby stores that can be found using the Find a Store function on Target.com," the statement read. "Guests also have additional ways to meet their shopping needs with Target’s expanded suite of fulfilment options, including free two-day shipping on Target.com with a Target REDcard and other services such as Shipt, Drive-Up and Target Restock."

The closing of the Morgan Park and Chatham locations will leave just three Target locations on the South Side, including one that opened recently in Hyde Park.
