White Sox Trade For All-Star Closer Alex Colomé

Alex Colomé was a 2016 American League All-Star with Tampa Bay and led all of baseball in saves the following year.

CHICAGO – Alex Colomé, a relief pitcher who has been named an All-Star and led baseball in saves while with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017, is now a member of the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox acquired Colomé in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on Friday, sending catcher Omar Narváez to the Mariners.

Colomé has 96 saves since 2016, which ties him for fifth most in the majors during that time span. Most recently, Colomé he went 7-5 with a 3.04 ERA (23 ER/68.0 IP), 30 holds, 12 saves and 72 strikeouts over 70 appearances last season between both the Rays and Mariners. He was 5-0 with a 2.53 ERA (13 ER/46.1 IP), all 30 holds and 49 strikeouts over 47 appearances with Seattle after being acquired from the Rays on May 25 as part of a four-player deal, according to a news release from the White Sox.

“We view Alex as a terrific addition to our bullpen given his experience in a number of relief roles, including closing very successfully for Tampa Bay in 2016-18 before moving into a setup role with the Mariners,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. “Alex is going to be a very important bullpen piece for Ricky and our team over the next couple of years.”
