Diocese Removes Illinois Priest Accused Of DUI, Stealing Funds

Diocese of Springfield shares letter regarding the removal of Father Barry J. Harmon.

SPRINGFIELD, IL — The Diocese of Springfield released a statement Tuesday on behalf of Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, who recently announced a local priest has been let go of his duties after being accused of stealing nearly $30,000 in church funds, drunk driving and watching pornography. Pending a criminal investigation, the statement said Bishop Paprocki announced the status of Father Barry J. Harmon, pastor at the Mother of Dolors Parish in Vandalia and St. Joseph Parish in Ramsey, to church officials on Sept. 5.

According to the statement, this decision comes almost a year after Harmon was placed on medical leave for some physical health issues on Oct. 30, followed shortly after by the discovery of "some financial irregularities" at the two parishes at which the priest was assigned. The statement said Bishop Paprocki announce to the parishes on Feb. 3 that evidence found Harmon had "misappropriated funds up to $29,000," which was reported to the police.

The diocese restored the money to the parishes, the priest was to make restitution to the diocese, and he was to receive the professional help he needed as his assignments were concluded, according to the statement.

Church officials recently learned Rev. Harmon was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) on July 31, which led to their recent decision.

"Considering all of this, the conclusion was reached that Father Barry Harmon is not suited for ministry of any kind in the priesthood and he said that he would voluntarily apply for laicization," the statement said.

Harmon is no longer listed the Mother of Dolors' website, however he is still listed as the pastor on discovermass.com.
