An Illinois State Trooper died from injuries he suffered in a traffic crash with a commercial vehicle Wednesday.

SPRINGFIELD, IL — An Illinois State Police trooper died after being involved in a traffic crash Wednesday. Illinois State Police Director Leo P. Schmitz announced trooper Ryan Albin was on patrol near Farmer City at 3:10 p.m. when the two-car crash occurred. The incident took place around the 155 milepost of I-74 when the trooper's vehicle was hit by a commercial vehicle. Albin suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead around 8:45 p.m., according to state police.

"Our hearts are heavy with grief as we mourn the loss of Trooper Albin," Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz said. "I extend my deepest sympathy to Trooper Albin’s family, friends, and co-workers. I pray that those who cared for and loved him find the strength they need during this most difficult time. No further words can express the pain and loss we are all feeling."

Albin joined the Illinois State Police in January 2006. He was assigned to District 6 in Pontiac as a canine officer. At the time of the crash, Albin’s canine partner, Biko, was in the rear of the squad car. Biko was transported to a local veterinarian’s office and appears to have sustained only minor injuries.
