Are Oak Park Ave.'s Manhole Covers Too High? Tinley's Got Answers
Readers asked about Tinley's manhole covers, saying they were too high, and wondered who paid for them. Officials have the answers for you.
TINLEY PARK, IL —Do the manhole covers on Oak Park Avenue seem a little too high to you? Were you wondering when they'd be fixed? You aren't the only one. A few readers reached out to Patch to learn more, and we've got the answer for you.
"Hey I was wondering if we taxpayers had to pay to fix the sewer caps on Oak Park Ave?? All winter the people in city hall said nothing was wrong with them. Just wondering??" one reader wrote. Some others said the covers seemed "too high."
Tinley's Public Works Director Kevin Workowski explained that the manholes belong to AT&T. Last fall, crews were able to only get a "binder course" laid down before the cold weather hit, he said. That's a middle layer of asphalt before the surfacing is done. Tinley then had to ramp the manholes so snow plows would not hit the frames and be damaged.

"Now that we are getting ready to put final lift of pavement on the roadway, the AT&T manholes and other manholes structures have been lowered in preparation for the final lift of pavement," he wrote to Patch.
Crews are in the final stages to smooth your Oak Park Avenue ride out, he said, but the weather hasn't cooperated.

"Hopefully we will get a break in all of this rain so we can finish the roadway," Workowski said.
The project is funded primarily by the state, he added. Tinley is paying about 20 percent of it.
