Awkward Family Photos Exhibition Comes to Illinois

While some people would rather those embarrassing pictures stay hidden and buried in the back of Mom’s closet, two childhood friends thought it would be better for people to share the humiliation and laughs.

The idea launched the website AkwardFamilyPhotos.com in May 2009. The creators first posted a couple of favorites from their personal collection, which quickly led to millions of visitors and submissions from across the globe.

Now, the popular site is moving from the web to a museum near you with its exhibition tour of over 200 classic photos from their collection. Each photo comes with its own funny, “behind the awkwardness” story. The creators of the exhibition hope it will “bring all our families a little closer together as we acknowledge those special times when we wished we were a lot farther apart.”
