Comparing Illinois' Manufacturing Industry to Rest of U.S.

How healthy is Illinois' manufacturing industry compared to our neighbors, rest of the nation?

A new study gives Illinois’ manufacturing industry a passing grade on a nationwide scale but shows it lagging considerably behind most of its neighbors.

The report, from the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University in Indiana, examined all states on nine different factors that would most affect a company’s decision to operate there, like local education level, tax climate, unfunded bond and pension liabilities, global reach and costs. Each state was ranked from best to worst in each category and grades were determined based how well it performed.

Overall, Illinois received one top mark and no failing grades — but it did come close.
