Feds Investigate Village's Handling of Apartment Complex

Village of Tinley Park is cooperating as Department of Justice digs in.

TINLEY PARK, IL — The mess continues over an apartment complex pitched as affordable housing slotted for Tinley Park.

The Housing and Civil Enforcement Section of the Department of Justice (DOJ) recently informed Tinley Park's legal counsel that it is conducting a civil investigation into officials' handling of the proposed Reserve development by Buckeye Community Hope in relation to the Fair Housing Act. The development, proposed for 183rd Street and Oak Park Avenue, was tabled at the Village’s Feb. 4 Plan Commission meeting.

In its letter, the DOJ requests the Village provide a number of documents relating to the Buckeye project as well as other land use and zoning matters in Tinley Park.

"At this time, the DOJ has made no determination as to whether any violations of the Fair Housing Act have occurred," according to a release from the village.

Village attorneys have contacted the Department of Justice and intend on cooperating with its investigation so the DOJ can review complete and accurate information prior to making its final determination.
