Pedestrian Killed By Metra Train In Tinley Park

It happened near the Oak Park Avenue stop in town. Metra says to expect delays on the Rock Island line Friday afternoon.

TINLEY PARK, IL — The Metra Rock Island line is experiencing delays after a pedestrian was struck by a train near the Oak Park Avenue stop in Tinley Park. The victim died on site, according to the village.

Metra took to Twitter to inform riders that around 3:40 p.m., inbound and outbound train movement had halted after train number 409 struck a pedestrian. The train was scheduled to arrive in Joliet at 3:50 p.m.

Metra said that track number two is open and moving from Mokena to Oak Forest. Inbound and outbound trains may be operating 15 to 50 minutes late after the incident.

Tinley Park residents said on Facebook that a number of helicopters were seen flying around town.

“I want to extend my deepest condolences to the victim’s family,” Tinley Park Mayor Michael Glotz said. “It’s never easy losing someone you love. The Tinley Park community stands behind you in your time of grief.”

On its website, Metra said that when a pedestrian is struck, it may take two to three hours before operations get back to normal. At 5:35 p.m., Metra said the train will no longer make its way to Joliet after the pedestrian was hit. Metra also announced that train number 420, scheduled to leave Joliet at 4:15 p.m., will not complete its track either.
