2 Men Dodge Police in Hours-Long Search in Tinley Park

Police responded to a theft report at Sam's Club in Tinley Park and detained several people when two got loose, drove away and hit cars.

TINLEY PARK, IL — Tinley Park police called off a search for two men after surrounding a cornfield for hours Friday.

The men fled police around 1 p.m. after a group had been detained on suspicion of retail theft at Sam's Club, 16100 Harlem Ave. The group had been at the Sam's Club in Matteson previously, where a retail theft had been reported.

One of the men at the scene in Tinley Park broke loose from police and hopped into a stolen car with another person presumably not connected to the crime.

An officer attempted to stop the car and his vehicle was struck by the fleeing suspects. No one was injured, but the pair's wild ride didn't stop there.

They headed south toward 191st Street, eventually hitting two other cars at the intersection of 191st Street and 80th Avenue. Police were not in pursuit at the time of the collision, according to Tinley Park police.

Witnesses told police two black males, one in a white t-shirt, disappeared into a nearby cornfield. The field was cordoned off and Mokena and Frankfort police assisted in a search, along with canine units and drones. After several hours police came up empty-handed and the search was terminated at 5:30 p.m.

The three others arrested at the Tinley Park Sam's Club were turned over to Matteson Police.

The investigation continues.
