Top 10 States With the Highest Tax Burdens

Illinois has one of highest tax burdens in the nation, but it does get one break when it comes to taxes, says WalletHub's new study.

To alleviate some of the confusion about how states impose taxes, WalletHub looked into each state's tax burden by comparing property taxes, income taxes and sales and gross receipts taxes as a percentage of total personal income.

Though Illinois ranks on the higher end of the scale when it comes to property and individual income taxes, the state is below average for sales taxes; it ranks 33rd in the nation in sales taxes, but 9th and 15th in property and income taxes, respectively.

Here are the top 10 states with the highest tax burdens in the country.
