Top 10 States with the Highest Wireless Taxes and Fees
Illinois is one of eight states in which taxes and fees account for more than 20 percent of customers' wireless bills.
Depending on how closely you look at your monthly wireless bill, you might have noticed taxes and fees account for a considerable — and growing — share of your total bill.
The national average wireless tax and fee burden increased one percentage point over the year to nearly 18 percent as of July 2015, marking the highest ever combined federal, state and local tax and fee rate.
Nationwide, wireless consumers pay roughly $5.8 billion a year in state and local taxes and fees, which are in excess to state and local sales taxes. On top of that, Federal Universal Service Fund surcharges cost consumers another $5 billion annually, according to a new analysis by the Tax Foundation.
