Illinoisans pay a lot in property taxes compared to the rest of the nation — the state has the second-highest property taxes in the country, almost double the national average. But what you pay depends on where you live, and some residents are spending a lot more than others.

SmartAsset has put together a list of the average effective property tax rate, the median property tax payment and the median home value by county across the state of Illinois.

Using this data, we’ve put together a map that shows each county’s average property tax rate ranking; the darker red the county, the higher the tax.
