Back to School: Be Aware of New Illinois Vaccine Requirements

Do you agree with the new requirement that all Illinois students in grades 6-12 receive the Tdap vaccine?

It’s hard to believe, but summer vacation is almost over.

In just a few short weeks, most area school districts will be back in session. Before you send your child back to school, be aware of the new Illinois vaccine requirements in place for middle and high school students.

The Illinois State Board of Health approved the requirement of the Tdap booster shot for all students in grades 6-12 earlier this year. The vaccine immunizes against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.

Students must show proof of having received the vaccination, have an appointment to get it, or have an approved medical or religious exemption on file in order to attend school. Those who don’t meet one of the above conditions by Oct. 15, 2013 will not be allowed in school until the requirements are met.
