Vernon Hills Couple With Coronavirus In Hospital ICU

Their daughters said even though both parents followed all the guidelines, they still became sick with the coronavirus.

VERNON HILLS, IL—A Vernon Hills couple remains in the intensive care of a nearby hospital after both contracted the coronavirus. According to CBS 2 Chicago, the couple is in their 50's and tested positive for COVID-19 in mid-March.

“We went from having a very kind of normal, expecting to just come back and be with our parents, finish up the school year to within five days, both of our parents, being in the hospital, in ICU," Mariel, 22, and Alexa, 19, told the TV station. The two sisters asked the news station to use only their first names and not to use their parents'.

The couple's daughters said even though both parents followed all the health guidelines, they still became sick. While some people may not take social distancing seriously or practice other safety guidelines, the daughters are urging them to reconsider.

“For us it’s incredibly important that people just make sure to wash your hands. If you think you’re sick, make sure to isolate yourself to a certain part of the house, try to minimize the exposure to yourself and the rest of your family,” Mariel told the TV station.

Minimize the risk of contracting the coronavirus (CDC recommendations):

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Put distance between yourself and other people.
  • According to the CDC, everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public, for example to the grocery store or to pick up other necessities.
    • Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
