A 19-year-old man faces seven counts of attempted murder after police said he fired several shots at them during a stop in Homan Square.

CHICAGO, IL — Two Chicago police officers were shot while making a traffic stop on the city's West Side early Sunday morning. Police returned fire and struck the suspect, according to information released by the Chicago Police Department.

The officers were in the 3300 block of West Polk Street, in the city's Homan Square neighborhood, around 2:30 a.m. when they stopped a car that matched a description from a person with a gun call, police said.

Police said the gunman, who they later identified as Jeffon Williams, 19, of Chicago, fired multiple shots while police tried to take him into custody.
