7 People Shot Near Chicago Playground

Victims, who ranged in age from 19 to 25, were shot when someone opened fire from a vehicle, aiming for a West Side park.

CHICAGO — Seven people gathered at Douglas Park on the city's West Side were shot and wounded when an occupant in a black Camaro opened fire at around 1:20 a.m. Chicago police said five of the victims were transported via ambulance to area hospitals, while the remaining two self-transported to hospitals for treatment.

The shooting happened near the playground at the park in the 2900 block of West Roosevelt Road.

Police said the following injuries were reported:

  • A man, 21, taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the groin.
  • A woman, 25, taken to Mt. Sinia in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the right arm and right leg.
  • A man, 20, taken to Stroger hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the right side of his body.
  • A woman, 19, taken to Stroger in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the right leg.
  • A woman, taken to Mt. Sinai in stable condition.
  • A man, 21, self-transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the left leg.
  • A man, 23, self-transported to Mt. Sinai in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and right hand.

No one was in custody in connection with the drive-by shooting. Area Central detectives are investigating. Police did not give a description of the shooter.

The Chicago violence came just hours after nine people were shot dead when a gunman opened fire outside a bar in Dayton, Ohio, and 20 people were killed in a mass shooting at a shopping center in El Paso, Texas described as a possible hate crime.
