Another Stop Work Order Issued For Belfry Project
The conversion of a landmark church and school into condominiums has been halted again.

CHICAGO, IL — Several years after the scheduled deadline for The Belfry condos in Ukrainian Village, construction has been stopped again. The city has issued another stop work order for the project at 913-925 N. Hoyne Ave. Ald. Brian Hopkins said his office requested the order after "unpermitted alterations" of the landmark church and school.
"This stop work order was necessary after the roof had been removed from this historic project," Hopkins said in a newsletter to constituents.
The alderman said he met with M & I Construction, property consultants and city representatives last Thursday to impose the following conditions on the developers and contractors (via 2nd Ward Office newsletter):

- The historic windows need to be restored.
- The contractor will need to commit in writing to restoring the roof back to its original condition.
- All historic bricks and materials will need to be put back in the same manner as existed before.
- Due to the extent of the alterations all grandfathered conditions were removed. Construction will now revert to a more historic condition.
- The general contractor and developer will need to, again, revise the permit and pay a penalty.
Hopkins also said the sidewalk and street outside The Belfry project have been damaged, and that he has asked to see the developer's plans for fixing them.
"If the public-way is not restored upon completion of this project, I will instruct Chicago Department of Transportation to issue citations which will force them into court proceedings."

The alderman said the stop work order won't be lifted until the city is satisfied that the developer and contractors have met the requirements.
