Homeowner Fatally Strangles Intruder Who Tased Him: Authorities

A 39-year-old Austin resident was tased, bitten and scratched in a struggle with a home invader, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A homeowner strangled a Taser-wielding intruder to death during a struggle Wednesday, authorities said. No charges have been filed against the 39-year-old Austin resident.

Derek Carson, 51, of the 1000 block of North Lawler Avenue, broke into a home in the 5000 block of West Chicago Avenue through a back window around 10 p.m., according to Chicago police.

He struggled with the 39-year-old homeowner, who was bitten, scratched and tased during the fight, police said. Carson was pronounced dead at the scene. The homeowner was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. His condition was stable as of early Thursday, according to police.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Carson died from asphyxia from being strangled during an altercation. Police said they were not familiar with either man and were unable to confirm if the Derek Carson who was killed was the same one arrested last year a block from his home on battery charges.
