Mayor Thompson Declares May 2021 “Bike Month” in Broadview

The mayor noted that between 2009 and 2017 about 1% of all trips in the United States were taken by bicycle.

(Broadview, IL) – The Village of Broadview’s top official has penned a proclamation declaring May 2021 as “Bike Month in Broadview”.

Mayor Katrina Thompson signed the proclamation on May 3 announcing that the village is acting in concert with theLeague of American Bicyclists and other local partners to promote bicycling as an “economical, healthy, convenient, and environmentally sound form of transportation” as part of National Bike Month.

The mayor noted that between 2009 and 2017 about 1% of all trips in the United States were taken by bicycle, according to the National Household Travel Survey. And the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey data show that there has been a 50% increase in the rate of commuting to work by bicycle, from .4% in 2005 to .6% in 2016.

“An increasing health and environmental consciousness on the part individuals and commuters is boosting the popularity of bicycling as an alternative to the automobile as the exclusive mode of business or personal transportation,” said Thompson. “And bicycle tourism has also emerged as an opportunity to promote Broadview and to encourage people to explore our community’s restaurants, cultural, and scenic attractions at a more leisurely, healthy pace.”

The mayor pointed out that the bicycle has a formal place both in the Broadview Police Department’s community policing strategy and her community health initiative.

“We have police bike patrols in Broadview that allow our officers to interact more intimately with residents, strengthening the relationship with the community,” said Thompson. “And, as part of my community health initiative, I lead a weekly bike ride with Broadview residents for one hour to get hearts pumping because aerobic physical activity can help reduce the risk of chronic disease, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.”

Bike Month, which was established in 1956, also includes Bike to Work Week, May 17-23, 2021 and Bike to Work Day is on Friday, May 21.
