CHICAGO — Chicago police said a suspect in Sunday's fatal shooting of 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams was shot multiple times by an officer as he attempted to carjack a family on the Eisenhower Expressway.

Superintendent David Brown told reporters Chicago police were following the suspect in a western suburb when he fled onto eastbound Interstate 290 before crashing near 25th Avenue. Images from the scene showed an SUV that had driven into a ditch on the shoulder of the expressway.

"Once his vehicle crashed, he then attempted to carjack a family that was in traffic on the freeway. That's when our officer engaged the suspect, fired his weapon. The suspect was shot multiple times, and he's in an area hospital as we speak."

Thursday's shooting happened around 4 p.m., with all eastbound lanes of Interstate 290 at Mannheim Road closed hours after the shooting due to the investigation, police said.

Brown said police found two guns at the scene. He declined to say if one was an AK-47, but confirmed that multiple suspects are believed to have been involved in Adams' killing.
