Sears To Close Its Last Chicago Store

The Portage Park location will shut its doors this summer, and a liquidation sale will begin later this month.

CHICAGO, IL — Sears is closing its remaining store in Chicago this summer following a liquidation store later this month, according to the Chicago Tribune. On Thursday, the struggling Hoffman Estates-based retailer told employees at the Six Corners shopping center in Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side that the store will be shuttered in mid-July, while its auto department will close in mid-May, the report added.

The store at 4730 Irving Park Road will begin a liquidation sale April 27. The closing comes nearly a year after Sears closed its Chicago location at 1601 N. Harlem Ave. The Portage Park store opened in 1938, a little more than a decade after the then-mail-order company began creating retail outlets.

A Sears spokesman would not say how many workers were being let go, but employees will be provided severance and allowed to apply for openings at other locations, the report stated. The company still has 150 people working at corporate offices in the Loop, and the representative told the Tribune that the closing doesn't "change our commitment to our customers and presence to Chicago’s residents."
