Glencoe Historic Preservation Commission Gives Landmark Status To $8M Listed Property

GLENCOE, IL — At a Glencoe Historic Preservation Commission meeting, members unanimously
approved a motion to recommend to the Village Board honorary landmark designation of the
home at 411 Lakeside Terrace.

After looking into the property as a result of receiving a demolition inquiry last year. The Commission agreed to nominate the home for honorary landmark designation. At meetings in December and January, members reviewed the landmark application before its approval at the Feb. 7 meeting.

The board noted the historical significance of the home:

Known historically as the Charles Henry Hermann House, for its first owner, it was designed by prominent architect Howard Van Doren Shaw and built in 1911. The home is one of 12 structures designed by Shaw located within the Village of Glencoe. Shaw is noteworthy for his design of Market Square in Lake Forest and many other large estate homes throughout the North Shore.

Village Board landmark designation offers only limited protection for the home, but the Commission said it hoped the new status would raise awareness of the property, which is currently for sale and being marketed as an opportunity to restore an architecturally significant home:
