Glencoe Mansion Sold for Record $19.5 Million

Groupon CEO paid more for home on Lake Michigan than anyone else in Chicago area.

The co-founder and CEO of Groupon recently paid $19.5 million in cash for a mansion that sits in four acres in Glencoe. The purchase is the highest-price home purchase in the Chicago area.

Billionaire Eric Lefkofsky is the owner of the 15,800-square-foot mansion right on Lake Michigan, the Chicago Tribune reports. Crain’s Chicago Business reported on the transaction last year but did not identify the owner.

Lefkofsky, 45, cofounded a Chicago-based marketing firm in 2001 and then started several other companies before cofounding Groupon under a previous name in 2007.

Although few details are available about the interior of the mansion designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, the Tribune did confirm the property contains a pool and tennis court.

According to a building permit submitted to Glencoe officials last month, Lefkofsky is proposing to expand the mansion even further to contain a gym and a spa.

Coming in at the top known price for any other residency in the Chicago area, it tops even the $19 million the federal government garnered from selling a massive Highland Park estate owned by convicted insurance magnate Mickey Segal.
