Lakefront Glencoe Mansion Sold For Nearly $5 Million
A mid-century ranch perched above tiered gardens and a 180-foot private beach is the priciest suburban home sale of the year so far.
GLENCOE, IL — A mid-century ranch atop a Glencoe bluff last week became the most expensive suburban home sale of 2019. The 1.2 acre lakefront property was sold for just short of $5 million Friday after spending nearly three years on the market.
The four-bedroom, 4,758-square-foot cedar and stone house has a 180-foot private beach below tiered gardens and a lift. The interior has an open plan with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake and the 70-foot bluff. The home's shared areas include French limestone heated flooring and its bedrooms and media room are carpeted.
According to its listing, the home was designed by Henry L. Newhouse, II, builder of more than a dozen mid-century North Shore homes and the son of another notable architect who created hotels, theaters, homes and apartment buildings in Chicago.

The 11-room home includes two gas fireplaces and a heated garage with room for four cars. The master suite was renovated in 2017 with a new bathroom and walk-in closets. It includes private access to a patio and garden walks.

Public records do not show when the property last changed hands or how much was paid. The new owners are not yet identified in public records, but the listing agent told Crain's Chicago Business they do not plan on demolishing the house. Crain's reported there have been eight residential sales of more than $4 million in Chicago since Jan. 1 but none in the suburbs.
