North Shore Had 14 Of Area's 50 Most Expensive Home Sales Of 2017

WINNETKA, IL — Outside of Chicago, virtually all of the priciest homes to be sold in 2017 were located on the North Shore, according to a new report. Crain's Chicago Business compiled this year's list of the most expensive home sales of the year, finding 14 of them along North Shore communities. A single home in Hinsdale and another in South Barrington were the only other suburban properties to crack the list.

Hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin topped the rankings this year — and it wasn't even close. His $58.5 million purchase of the (unfinished) top four floors of 9 W. Walton St. in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood was more than three times as expensive as the previous record holder. The second most expensive Chicago home sale of the year was $12 million, according to Crain's.

And already in 2018, two lakefront North Shore homes have sold at prices that would have made them the biggest sales of last year. A 1992 Glencoe mansion was demolished after selling for $8.5 million, while the buyers of a 110-year-old $10 million Winnetka estate have applied for permits to tear it down.
