Trailblazing Doctor's Former Lakefront Home Asks For $9.6 Million
The former home of two doctors, including Chicago's first female plastic surgeon, is now Winnetka's second most expensive listing.
WINNETKA, IL — A 91-year-old lakefront mansion owned by the estate of a trailblazing doctor is on the market for the first time in four decades with an asking price of $9.6 million. The three-story, brick and stone design was built in 1927 on a 1.1-acre lot. It includes about 100 feet of beach, which its listing described as one of the largest stretches of private shoreline in the state.
The 13-room house has four aboveground bedrooms, four bathrooms, three fireplaces and a two-car attached garage. There is a marble bathroom, a sun room, a recreation room a balcony and more. For close to four decades, the home had been owned by a pair of doctors who have passed away in recent years.
Born Stavrula Perutsea in the Greek village of Tseria Messinia, the home's last owner immigrated to the United States shortly after graduating medical school in 1949 and became chief of surgical staff at several Chicago area hospitals. She obtained a Cook County medical license in 1954 and became the first woman practicing plastic surgery in Chicago, according to an obituary after her death in 2016 at the age of 91.

She married in 1959 after meeting her husband, Fabian Gotsis, at the Hellenic Medical Society Ball, according to the Chicago Tribune. They would open up a medical clinic in Calumet Park in the 1960s and move to Winnetka in 1977. Mr. Gotsis, also a doctor, died in 2005.


The property was briefly listed in July before returning to the market on Sept. 21 asking for $9.6 million. It is not listed as a village-designated landmark, and the land could be subdivided, according to its listing. The property has an estimated 2017 market value of $3.8 million, according to the Cook County Assessor's Office, and its annual tax bill that year was more than $88,000.

The property is the second most expensive listing currently on the market in in Winnetka. An outlandish 27,00-square-foot property on Locust Road built in 2008 for a CEO of a real estate investment firm and his wife at a reported cost of more to $40 million – "a budget that doesn't exist in today's market," according to its listing.

This year's most expensive home sales in the village have been a pair of Sheridan Road lakefront homes that sold in April and May to the north of the Gotsis home that sold for $12 million.
