Firefighters Save Blue Heron Trapped In Fishing Line In Woodridge

WOODRIDGE, IL -- A blue heron has Lisle-Woodridge firefighters and Woodridge police to thank for saving its life on Earth Day. The heron was found tangled in fishing line near Lake Harriet, according to police.

Woodridge police shared an image of firefighters cutting the blue heron free from the fishing wire, which had been discarded on the ground. They used the Earth Day rescue as an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of littering.

Residents were reminded of other ways they can observe Earth Day to help keep animals and the planet safe.

They wrote, "This Earth Day, please consider ways to help protect wildlife, such as reporting any harassment of wildlife, slowing down when driving (i.e., when animals are crossing roads), and securing garbage can lids."

Woodridge police wrote that the blue heron rescue can serve as a reminder that "even simple actions can make a big impact on the environment and wildlife."
