DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — An Aurora man faces several charges stemming from accusations of stealing a BMW from a garage at a Westmont home, and in a separate case involving a warrant out of Woodridge, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin, Westmont Chief of Police James Gunther and Woodridge Chief of Police Brian Cunningham announced in a news release. According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office, Quilvio Contreras-Vargas, 20, from the 1000 block of N. Farnsworth, faces several charges, including one count of residential burglary and one count of aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle over $25,000, both of which are felony charges.

According to the news release, Westmont Police Department officers were called to a report of a stolen motor vehicle at 1:30 a.m. Friday on James Drive. Officers spoke with the homeowner and learned that another resident got home at 1:15 a.m. and noticed that the garage door was open and the car, a 2020 BMW 3 Series, was missing. According to the report, the key fob was in the car while it was park in the garage.

Later Friday evening, Illinois State Police troopers located the reported stolen BMW on I-55 as it was traveling near 100 mph. According to the news release, police report the driver, later identified as Contreras-Vargas, tried exiting at I-55 at County Line Road, but lost control of the car and crashed into the median, causing the car to flip and crash. According to police, the news release said Contreras-Vargas then got out of the car and was arrested as he tried leaving the crash site.

According to the news release, Cunningham said Woodridge police officers responded to the area of Janes and Waterbury for gunshot reports on July 1.

“Upon arrival, officers found two gunshot victims with non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation into the matter resulted in an arrest warrant against the defendant for two counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and One count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. With the assistance of our law enforcement partners and the Westmont Police Department, the suspect in that case was arrested. My deepest appreciation goes out to the Westmont Police Department for helping us with this ongoing investigation.”

According to the news release, Berlin said that Contreras-Vargas now faces felony charges in two separate cases. He also thanked all law enforcement agencies involved, and Assistant State’s Attorney Anthony Pasquini for his work "in securing charges against Mr. Contreras-Vargas.”
