Naperville Annexation Question Won't Appear on April Ballot, Judge Says

The proposal to annex Woodridge, Warrenville and Lisle into Naperville was shot down by a circuit court judge this week.

The DuPage County Circuit Court has decided to not include a controversial question about annexation on April 4's ballot, according to a release from the Village of Woodridge.

An anonymously submitted petition started circulating around Woodridge, Warrenville, Lisle and Naperville in early January suggesting the three former municipalities be annexed into Naperville. In January, Lisle's petition had 221 signatures, Warrenville's had 81 and Woodridge's had 51.

All three towns' mayors expressed their disapproval in the motion last month.

The circuit court judge reportedly shot down the ballot suggestion this week due to "deficiency to meet even the minimum number of signatures," according to the release. The petition only managed to garner 20 percent of the total signatures needed to move forward with the request. The judge also cited other deficiencies in the proposed plan.

Lisle's mayor, Joe Broda, told the Chicago Tribune in January that he didn't quite understand the reason for the petition's circulation, or why someone would start it.

"Naperville has unique characteristics, Lisle has unique characteristics," he said. "We all have unique characteristics, we're different, and that provides value. To me, it doesn't make any sense. It's laughable."
