Rep. Foster Pens Letter Demanding Answers On Immigrant Detention

The letter was signed by nearly a dozen lawmakers, including Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin.

WOODRIDGE, IL — Rep. Bill Foster (IL-11) has penned a letter demanding answers to why more than 150 immigrants who live in Illinois were detained or separated from their children during "Operation Keep Safe." Foster, who represents parts of DuPage and Kane County, signed the letter along with Sen. Tammy Duckworth and Sen. Dick Durbin.

"No one deserves to be detained without due cause or reason," Foster said in a media release. He added "The people of Illinois deserve no less than a complete and detailed response to each of the questions laid out in the letter."

The letter requests a "prompt response" to questions surrounding the operation, including:

  • How many people did ICE stop?
  • How many people were arrested after being stopped?
  • How many children had a parent or guardian arrested or detained?

The letter also demands a "detailed list of criminal convictions" and charges faced by each person arrested or detained during "Operation Keep Safe."

"Operation Keep Safe" action began on May 25 in Illinois and lasted for six days. Foster said a total of 156 people were arrested.
