This school year, Woodridge VFW is very proud to present this award to Mr. Joseph Wechman.
Jefferson Junior High School Principal Justin Warnke wrote,” It is with great pleasure that I nominate Joseph Wechman for the honor of VFW Teacher of the Year. As an eighth grade social studies teacher at Jefferson Junior High School in Woodridge, IL Joe has help create an engaging curriculum and lessons that promote civic literacy, rights and responsibilities or United States citizens, and develop a deep understanding of the values and beliefs of a democratic government. Joe Wechman has created a social studies program that celebrates student inquiry and guides student in the questioning of difficult social issues and help to discover solutions to today’s conflicts throughout the world.” “Mr. Wechman is an extremely patriotic teacher at Jefferson. He does a thorough job of educating students of what it truly means to be an American. He leads students through a variety of activities to examine and question whether freedom is really free, and the responsibilities and rights of being an American citizen.” He has also increased student participation in the VFW Patriots Pen Essay contest. A few short years ago a mere five Jefferson students wrote essays.
This past semester our Post received 441 essays up from 370 last year!
