Woodridge Mayor Honors Special Olympics Multi-Medalist

Lifelong Woodridge resident Michael Drabik has earned more than 100 medals during his career.

WOODRIDGE, IL — Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham recently set aside a day to honor a lifelong resident who has won more than 100 medals in the Special Olympics. Michael Drabik, who started competing in track and field when he was just eight years old, recently took home the bronze medal in snowshoeing at the 2018 Special Olympics.

Cunningham proclaimed March 1 "Michael Drabik Day" in honor of the athlete and publicly recognized his successful career.

Drabik, who attended District 68 and District 99 schools, also garnered gold in cross-country skiing at the 2017 Special Olympics. Since he began competing, Drabik has won a whopping 111 medals and 42 ribbons.

He spends his off-season time as a Global Messenger for Special Olympics, giving speeches at schools, businesses, and special events to raise awareness.

Mayor Cunningham said in a press release, "I know sports are [Michael's] passion, and the entire community is proud of his success."
