Carmel, Fishers Among Best Small Cities With Lowest Poverty

A new study ranks smaller cities based on affordability and quality of life.

CARMEL, IN — Carmel, Indiana is among the best small cities in the country, according to WalletHub. The personal finance website recently released the results of a study comparing smaller towns based upon "33 key indicators of livability," including housing costs to school-system quality to restaurants.

The findings ranked 1,268 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety, with Carmel ranking in the 99th percentile. The village ranked 15th in terms of affordability, 61st for education and health and 31st for safety compared with the other cities on the list.

Fishers was ranked in the 98th percentile, coming in at 11th in terms of affordability, 63rd for education and health and 45th for safety compared with the other cities on the list.

Westfield was ranked in the 96th percentile.

Columbus and Plainfield ranked in the 70's, West Lafayette, Crown Point and Jeffersonville in the 60's, and several other Indiana cities in the lower half of the list.

The 99th percentile represents the top 1 percent of small cities in America, according to WalletHub. The top-ranked city with the highest total score was Princeton, New Jersey, while Bessemer, Alabama, which calls itself "The Marvel City," ranked last. Read the full rankings here.
