100-Year-Old Indianapolis Restaurant On 'America's Favorite' List

Indianapolis restaurateur highlights The Workingman's Friend in Bon Appétit's 'America's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurants' project.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Most people know the popular eateries or hot spots in their city, but Bon Appétit is sharing America's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurants thanks to the opinions of dozens of interesting people across the country. Bon Appétit said they asked 80 people - writers, novelists, chefs, comedians, NBA players and more - to give the scoop on their "most-trusted" haunts that they often return to.

Indianapolis made the list, thanks to a North Belmont Avenue spot and one of its fans, restaurateur and Patachou Inc. founder, Martha Hoover. If you live in the area, you know Patachou. Hoover highlighted The Workingman's Friend, which was founded a century ago.

“This Indianapolis institution is known for its smashed, extra-crispy griddle burgers," Hoover said in the America's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant project. "Founded in 1918 by Macedonian immigrants to feed nearby railroad workers, it’s still family-owned, extra greasy, and amazing."

While The Workingman's Friend doesn't have a website, Hoover mentions their "very entertaining" Facebook page.
