Indiana Is The 10th Fattest State In America

WalletHub has released its '2017 Fattest States in America' list and we're sharing the top 20, which includes Indiana.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and thanks to a report released today by WalletHub, we now know 2017's Fattest States in America. According to the personal-finance website, Americans collectively spend nearly $200 billion per year on obesity-related health costs. Indiana came in at number 10, which unfortunately means we are the 10th fattest state in America.

According to WalletHub, analysts compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 19 key metrics in order to determine which states contribute the most to our country's overweight and obesity problem. These metrics include share of overweight and obese population to sugary-beverage consumption among adolescents, and obesity-related health care costs.

  • $407.6 Billion: Estimated cost of diabetes in the U.S. in 2015 ($312.2 billion in direct medical costs, $95.4 billion in nonmedical costs)
  • $7,900: Average annual diabetes-related health care costs for patients
  • 2.3: Number of times by which a diabetes patient’s health care costs increase
  • 11 & 13 Years: Reduction in the average male and female type 1 diabetes patient’s life expectancy, respectively
