Gary Woman Attacked and Strangled by Man Who Lent Her Phone: COPS

Cops said man lent phone to woman when she became stranded in Robbins, IL, then sexually abused and strangled her before she could get away.

ROBBINS, IL -- A Gary, Ind., woman was strangled and sexually abused by a Good Samaritan, who loaned the woman his phone after she had been left stranded in a car in Robbins, Ill., Cook County Sheriff’s Police said. Shaymontae Mobley, 19, of Robbins, is charged with one count each of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery and unlawful restraint. He is scheduled for a bond hearing Thursday afternoon in the Cook County Sixth Municipal Courthouse in Markham.

Sheriff’s police said in a news release that around 5:45 a.m. Sept. 4, Mobley let the Gary woman borrow his cell phone to call for a ride after she had been left stranded in a car in the 14000 block of Finley Avenue in Robbins. Mobley, who did not know the woman, is said to have gotten into the vehicle to wait with her. While they were waiting in the car, sheriff’s police said Mobley forced the woman to touch him and strangled her when she tried to escape

Eventually, the woman was able to flee. She suffered non-threatening life injuries. Robbins police found Mobley in the 13900 block of Grace Avenue where he was taken into custody. Cook County Sheriff’s Police detectives conducted the investigation at the request of the Robbins Police Department.
