CROWN POINT, IN — A Hammond man behind bars for stabbing a local couple in 2017 is facing other accusations by a fellow Lake County Jail inmate. Travis S. Dade, 27, who is facing up to 30 years for the attack on a Hammond couple, is accused of trying to rape his cellmate, The Northwest Indiana Times reported. According to the news report, Dad was naked from the waist down in his cell when correctional officers at the jail responded to screams and yells for help around 2 a.m. Dec. 7, Lake Criminal Court records state.
The Times said the man's cellmate told police he recalled Dade getting out of bed, grabbing him by the shoulders and then by the neck after the cellmate tried punching him and calling for help, records report. According to an affidavit, Dade shoved his thumb into the man's eyes while also choking him, pulling his pants down and banging his head on the floor, causing the man to go in and out of consciousness. According to the news report, the cellmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and Dade was charged Dec. 28 with felony attempted rape, two counts of battery, sexual battery, confinement and strangulation.
According to court records, Dade's cellmate tried to get the attention of correctional officers during previous incidents involving Dade that made him uncomfortable, and at one point was allegedly told by an officer to "shut up, lie down and deal with it," among other things, The Times said.
