Missing Boater's Blanket Found In Indiana Lake

But there's still no sign of 20-year-old Keegan Whaling, who vanished Oct. 29 in Valparaiso.

VALPARAISO, IN — A Valparaiso man remains missing, weeks after his canoe capsized on an Indiana lake, but authorities said a blanket that belonged to him has been found. Keegan Whaling, 20, has been missing since his canoe overturned about 150 yards from shore just before 7 a.m. Oct. 29 in Long Lake. A 21-year-old friend who was with Whaling was able to swim to shore and find help, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The friend reportedly said he did not see Whaling make it to shore, and officials believe he is still in the water.

On Tuesday, IDNR said a green blanket that matched one Whaling had in his canoe was found draped over a railing at the Long Lake boat ramp. Officials were able to identify the person who found the blanket. The individual, whose name is not being released, showed an IDNR officer where the blanket was found in the lake. IDNR confirmed the blanket is the same one that was with Whaling when he went into the water.

Indiana conservation officers on Tuesday launched a multi-agency effort to find Whaling's body, using a cadaver dog to search the surface of the water and sonar to search the lake. The search was hindered by "extensive plant material" in the lake, IDNR said, which prevents the water from being thoroughly scanned by sonar or for divers to safely search the lake.
