American Family Road Trip Survey Findings Released

New survey from Harris Poll and Chevrolet finds what the American family likes, dislikes about road trips ahead of Thanksgiving travel .

Millions of Americans are once again preparing to hit the road for Thanksgiving weekend, and Chevrolet has released some interesting data the company collected in a recent survey that may help you get through your upcoming road trip. The Harris Poll revealed kids are actually not the most stressful part of the family road trip, as hearing the constant "Are we there yet?" and keeping the children entertained ranked lower than traffic, packing and cost when it comes to the top stressors on family road trip. The report adds nearly two in three parents say traffic is the most stressful part of the family road trip

In a release, Chevrolet also uncovered data about what moms, dads and children think about road trips, which are listed below with additional data on some of the survey's main findings:

  • Moms Biggest Stress: Moms are more likely than dads to say keeping the kids entertained is the most stressful part of family road trips.
  • Dads Do Most of the Driving: 75% of dads say they do most of the driving during family road trips, versus 31% of moms
  • Perfect Road Trip Length: typically 6 hours
  • Number of Devices: Families today bring an average of 6.6 devices on family road trips.
  • Kids Like Spending Time on the Road: 90% of parents who take road trips say their kids enjoy road trips too.
  • Nostalgic Memories: 86% of American parents who took road trips when they were growing up say that they have “a lot of fond memories” from childhood that took place on family road trips.
  • Top Two Favorite Aspects of Family Road Trips: Spending time with family (80%) and exploring and stopping at interesting locations and destinations (69%).
  • Ideal Road Trip Vehicle: Nearly two thirds of all American parents (63%) say that they would prefer to take a family road trip in an SUV over any other type of vehicle, with more than 2 in 5 (42%) preferring a large SUV with 3 rows.
  • Children are involved in planning: 67% of parents involve their children in family road trip planning.
