Another Flu-Related Death In Indiana: How To Help Prevent Virus

It's still true; the sooner you get vaccinated the better, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports.

ACROSS INDIANA — The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) now reports four flu-related deaths across the state as of Jan. 5, 2019. According to health officials, flu activity is high and widespread across Indiana. ISDH officials report the latest numbers of people from each age group that have been to Indiana clinics with influenza-like illness:

  • Ages 0 to 4: 39
  • Ages 5 to 24: 13
  • Ages 25 to 49: 14
  • Ages 50 to 64: 10
  • Ages 65 and older: 4

The ISDH reminds everyone that as long as flu viruses are circulating, it's not too late to get vaccinated as the flu shot can reduce illnesses, missed work and school, doctor visits, and can also prevent flu-related hospitalizations.

The sooner you get vaccinated the better, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends early vaccination as it takes about two weeks after the shot for antibodies that protect against the flu to develop in the body.

According to ISDH, the CDC recommends that everyone age 6 months and older, including healthcare workers, get a flu vaccine each year. According to a release, health officials said because infants under 6 months can't be vaccinated, it's important for anyone in a household where a young baby lives or visits to get a flu shot in an effort to protect the child.
