Coat Check Coffee and the Athenaeum: A Hipster Hideaway with a History

Inside the gorgeous Athenaeum building lies a true treasure for the coffee drinkers of Indianapolis. Coat Check Coffee embodies the aesthetic of a quaint hipster hideaway. Upon entering the building, one is struck by the sheer elegance of the architecture. Built in the 19th century, the Athenaeum building embodies the German Renaissance Revival style. Ornate woodwork adorns various elegant staircases, while warm sunlight filters through the stained-glass windows, making the space as elegant as it is inviting. More than this, the Athenaeum comes with a history. Built by Kurt Vonnegut’s grandfather, the Athenaeum stands as a monument to the German community of Indianapolis. The Athenaeum started as a destination for many German clubs and other cultural programs and continues to host events to this day. The Athenaeum Foundation functions as a hub for many events and programs which are central to the Indianapolis community. The Indiana German Heritage Society, Indianapolis German Language Institute, YMCA, Young Actors Theatre, and finally Coat Check Coffee are just a few of the organizations who partner with The Athenaeum Foundation and utilize the gorgeous building.

And now for the coffee. The atmosphere of Coat Check provides one with a refined experience which is wholly absent of pretention. The staff is welcoming and seem to deeply enjoy their work. The coffee, supplied by Indianapolis’ own Tinker Coffee, is of a fine quality and comes in many different variations. Dark, milky, sweet, and completely unique, no one will leave disappointed. The decor beats any Starbucks interior, the furnishings combined with the historical bones of the Athenaeum, work together to create a cozy post-modern space. Beyond the coffee, there is a wide selection of delicious pastries, made in house and with love. There is plenty to enjoy after you grab a cup of coffee, you may explore the art gallery up-stairs, and peruse the timeline documenting German American history in Indianapolis which lines the back walls of the Coat Check shop.

All in all, Coat Check coffee combines history and coffee to create a wholesome experience which is unique to the Indianapolis community.
