'Monkey Around' With New Long-Tailed Macaques At Indianapolis Zoo

Indianapolis Zoo's new Long-Tailed Macaques exhibit opens Memorial Day Weekend. See how the zoo is getting ready.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — If you're seeing the hashtag #IndyMonkeys on Twitter, it's because Indianapolis Zoo is getting ready for the opening of its newest exhibit and wants you to join in on the excitement. As the zoo prepares for the opening of Sharing One World: Long-tailed Macaques, they've put several statuesque "friends" around the city.

If you spot one of the little statue Long-Tailed Macaques, Indianapolis Zoo encourages you to take a picture and share it on Twitter or social media using the hashtag .

Indianapolis Zoo says the new exhibit is a gift of John and Cynde Barnes. These Long-Tailed Macaques are the only Macaque who swims throughout their entire life, whether it's to cool off or to simply play, the zoo shares.

Indianapolis Zoo Exhibit Makes 'Best Zoo Exhibits' List

According to the zoo, their swimming ability gives them an advantage when it comes to accessing food, as they're able to dive underwater to catch prey, including crabs and frogs. Long-Tailed Macaques usually live near or around rivers, oceans shorelines and mangrove swamps, and often jump into the water to escape predators, including pythons, raptors or large cats.
